Giants have placed third baseman Zack Cozart on unconditional release waivers. The club had designated Cozart for assignment on Monday in order to clear a 40-man roster spot for pitcher Jake Jewell.
The Giants acquired Cozart from the Angels last month along with minor league infielder Will Wilson in exchange for a player to be named later and cash.
Cozart, 34, spent the past couple of seasons with the Angels battling injuries. Across 360 plate appearances between both years, he mustered a .557 OPS. Given Cozart’s age, injury history, and declining production, he will likely have to settle for a minor league contract if he wants to continue his playing career.
